Music Player

Listen to your music from your boxee library. The app adds additional features as:
- random playlists
- genre selection
- add to queue
- see now playing
- search music
- shuffle specific artists/genre

Playlist support:
- For iTunes you need a file called ‘iTunes Music Library.xml’ in the ‘iTunes’ folder, this should be created automatically by iTunes.
- The folders scanned for each source are ‘Playlists’ for m3u and ‘iTunes’ for iTunes playlists (case sensitive)

Example setup, you need to add below root ‘music’ dir as source directory to your boxee setup:

music/(your music files)
music/iTunes/iTunes Music Library.xml
music/Playlists/*.m3u

Boxee box
To access playlist on the boxee box one need to pair it for first time use:

  1. Press refresh playlist from the playlist menu
  2. You see a 4 digit code from boxee (memorize it)
  3. Wait 4 seconds
  4. A new dialog pops up where you can enter this 4 digit code and confirm
  5. Done

Tips:
- To get the correct album art place a folder.jpg file in you album folder
- Use relative paths for m3u playlists
- Be patient playlist scanning can take up to 1-3 minutes.
- Keep the box in sleep instead of shutdown (after a restart boxee cleans its temp folder and the iTunes playlists will not work anymore – you need to make a refresh)

You can find the source of the music player at github: GitHub

    Hi.

First things first what a great app!

But in the random, it only plays 40 songs then it stops…

Is there a setting i can tweak??

Hi Sjon, this is true. It will prevents the formations of very long lists which on some systems have a long loading time. 40 songs of about 3 minutes should get you about 120 minutes of playing time.

If you want more a simple solution is to query a set of 40 random numbers and play it. Once playback has started again query another 40 songs and instead of play it, now set it in queue. This should add the songs to the end of the current playlist. You can extend it as long as you like

        Hi there,

I’m another that would like to see more than 40 random songs at a time. Personally I listen to random songs (from a local drive) 12-14 hours per day, most days. (no playlists)

The 40 selection runs quite fast on a standard boxee box and I’m happy to wait a little for a fresh random list each day.

A suggestion; How about a user selection of “Random 40″ and “Random 400″? Even a “Random 200″ would be cool.

        Just an idea… Carlos

Unfortunately not at the moment, but it could be something to work on. This is due to that the itunes playlists are stored temporary as m3u and the rest of the music is crawled from the boxee database

Great App. Much better than the built in music player. Is there any chance of getting more artist and/or album information from the internet when playing a song or album (eg album art, information about artist etc.)?

Most information should be available from the boxee scraper. Just make sure you have your music files well indexed with id3 and place a folder.jpg in your album directory for coverart.

My app is unfortunately not a scraper but just outputs the boxee db so adding data is very load intensive. Might be adding something in the future dough.

    Hi Bart,
    Ben Kooistra

It seems the latest boxee releases have broken the playlist suport on the boxee box. Notice that accessing these external playlist is really a big workaround/hack. But I will look into some solution if I have some spare time left.

This is an AWESOME App! Most of the apps, i look at and can take or leave, but this is the sort of music player Boxee should have had right out of, um, the box!

I am curious why we have to save external playlists, when the iTunes xml file contains all the playlists. While you are parsing the XML file for the music content, why not just grab the playlists as well?

my app actually uses the boxee database to lookup the music. There is a feature to parse also the itunes xml database, but that one is currently broken in the 1.5 release unfortunately. Have to make a fix for that.

    Hi Bart,
Just got my Boxee a few days ago and found the Music player to be just terrible. Yours looks great, so thank you for your efforts. Have you managed to find a workaround for the Playlist as noted in #24 above?

    Thanks

    Great app.
